Ahead of the Game with the New Year - Geek Turned Athlete

Ahead of the Game with the New Year

My “to do list” for accomplishing my 2010 goals is starting out great!  I decided to start my list this week instead of waiting until the 1st.  Seriously, why wait?

Yesterday’s speed workout on the tready went perfectly!  I’m not going to lie, and say that the workout was painless.  It was quite uncomfortable:

  • 2 min @ 3.5
  • 2 min @ 5.0
  • remaining distance up to 1 mile @ 6.0
  • 4 x .5 mile @ 7.8 w/ .5 mile rests in between @ 6.0
  • remaining distance to total 5 miles @ 6.0
  • 5 min walking cool down

After my fourth set of sprints, I was drenched in sweat and breathing hard.  There was an older gentleman using the treadmill next to me who got off and stood next to mine.  I took my headphones off and looked at him as I raised an eyebrow:

 “Yes?”

“Could you just take my mind out of my body and take it with you on your run?”

“I wish!” I said smiling.

You are working way to hard next to me.  It’s making me look bad!”

“Thanks!”

Then, he actually moved to another treadmill.  It made me feel really good that I looked like I was working out, but I’ve never had someone switch treadmills because of that.  It was really weird (it wasn’t like I had gas yesterday either just in case you were wondering.  I’ve moved treadmills because of other people having gas before.), but I took it as a compliment. hehe 😉

After that, I did my own stretching yoga/ foam rolling session while waiting for Steve to pick me up.  It was great, and my legs felt fresh today for my run because of it.

Steve and I went out for a 4 mile run/walk together this afternoon before it got dark around 4:30pm.

Yes, it gets dark here about that time in the winter. :)  It was a run/walk because his knee was bothering him again!  I just wish he would get it fixed and go to physical therapy, but it looks like we might have to wait until we get back to the states to get a second opinion with a nonmilitary doc.DSC05325

Just some houses in our neighborhood.  Cool, huh?DSC05326

I will have to make up my 5 miler later this week.

We’ve got a New Year’s Eve group ride tomorrow as well!  It is going to be freezing, but I’m looking forward to getting on my bike for the first time in months!  Then, we have a New Year’s Eve party that we are going to after that.  I don’t like going out downtown to a bar for New Year’s Eve.  I like the safety of a friend’s house or my own!  It can get crazy out in the public!

Do you like staying in or going out for New Year’s Eve?

Normally I like going out to a party or whatnot but this year I really could care less. I kinda just want to stay at home and snuggle up. I wouldn’t mind going out for dinner but I really don’t feel like going for a “night on the town.” I don’t think my bf is overly excited either. We’ll probably just have a few friends over and relax.

We have been invited to several parties, but I really just like staying home and going to bed at a decent hour. I am not sure why, but I just haven’t ever gotten into the whole New Year’s Eve party scene.

You are really lucky to be in such a beautiful part of the world. The bike rides and runs you get to take are spectacular.

    What?

Not everybody is training for an Ironman and are able to stay awake past 9pm. I’ve already planned on waking up at 11pm with Melissa and Teegan and then promptly back to bed by 12:02. I have a 60 mile ride and 8 mile run planned for the next day.

Happy Freakin’ New Year to me 😉

Nice job, I stink at sprints, but hope to incorporate more in the new year!
