So, yesterday during my indoor cycling class that I was teaching, I had to unclip to get off my bike to pick up my mic cover that had fallen off.  To do this, you have to twist your foot a little to unclip yourself.  I twisted too much, and my ankle hurt just a little.  I didn’t think much of it until I was turning off all the fans after class, and my ankle just started throbbing with sharp pain.  I ignored it going out of the gym, and drove home.  Then, it didn’t bother me during my 6 miler (well, it hurt just a tad).  Finally, during yoga it was killing me while I was lunging, doing the warrior pose, and anything where we had to roll our feet.  By the time I got home, it was a little swollen.  I iced it, and at the same time just kept telling myself that it was nothing and that I would be just fine.  Fast forward to this morning: I couldn’t walk down the stairs normally.  I had to limp down the stairs, basically.  The good news is that it doesn’t hurt to walk.  The bad news is that it now hurts to run or to take stairs.

I’m taking another day off from running, and perhaps the next rest of the week.  It depends upon how it feels in a few days.  I’m not happy about this, but I think that I am over that stage in my life where I was just so hard headed that I ran through any pain which in turn, extended healing time.   I talked to a friend at the pool today about aqua jogging.  I’ve never done it, but it looks like it might be fun to try while the ankle is healing.  Once I get done with a little bit more research on it, I will be posting about it.  Have any of you aqua jogged before?  Any pointers?

I decided to go ahead with my swim workout today with my bum ankle and a lingering cold (it is not full blown, but annoying!) though.  It was the first time back to the pool in a month or two?  I don’t know, but it has been quite a while.  The motivation to get into any less than 90 degree water has been nonexistent with the snow flurries that we have been having over here.  I made myself go this week though.  I think I got a little motivated by the tri party this weekend.  By the way, this is totally a reused pic.  I forgot my camera today.  Imagine total whiteness from the snow outside the windows for today.DSC02303 So anyway, is it bad if my arms felt like they were going to fall off after just 100 meters?  Hehe.  Yes.  It was actually quite embarrassing.  I know some of the lifeguards over there, and joked with them that they needn’t jump in to save me if I looked that I was drowning.  Little did they know, I was serious.  Heh.  I warmed up with 200 meters, and did some kicking and pull drills, then finished with some sets of 150 meters and a 200 meter cool down.

My stroke is all out of wack, and I don’t feel smooth in the water like I remember feeling last year.  And this is totally my fault for taking such a long break from swimming.  Although swimming is not at the top of my list of fun things to do, this predicament only makes me want to go back again and again.  I know for sure that my arms are going to be dead tomorrow!!  That is what I get for not swimming lately though!!  I’m excited for Thursday when I go again. :)

Have any of you gotten into a new sport lately or come back to one that you haven’t done in a while?

I bought the bike that I am riding in April of 09 and I hadn’t been on a bike since I was 7 years old… so now i had to re-learn riding a bike and use clips.. the first few times it was a disaster… I have got a couple good scars from falling off my bike.. lol. I know what you mean with your ankle.. last year we were hiking in yosemetti and I hurt my ankle, ignored it and by the end of the trip it turned into a big problem..

Hope you feel better and your ankle heals quickly.

I haven’t played racquetball in about 1 year. I loved it so much, I can’t believe it;s been that long, but your post reminded me that I should look into getting back into it.

I’ve never really done any swimming workouts. I’ve been wanting to try it though.

That’s too bad about your ankle! I hope you feel better soon!

Well it’s better to rest your ankle now, then to have more complications later i suppose. I hope you feel better though.

I have the same sort of lingering cold. It’s not a full cold (and I’m thankful for that), but it does come with and on/off sore throat and runny nose. Especially not fun in this weather.

Hey Nicole! Ouch on the ankle, dude. :(

So aqua jogging feels a little weird at first, but it definitely is light on the joints and provides a lot of resistance. Try to pretend like you are running, which seems easy, but it’s a very awkward to start. Move your arms like you would while running, and move the legs kind of like your on your bike.

If you want to get a really good upper body workout with less stress on the ankle, try doing “pull” drills with a pull buoy. It’ll really help streamline your stroke and you concentrate more on your arms/shoulders.

Just a couple of suggestions. :) Heal quickly!

Oh gosh, I totally feel you on the swimming…I was a competitive swimmer for 10 years, then quit and kept it up in college, then last semester I trained really hard for running, and pushed swimming aside…well now I can’t run, and I hopped back in the pool last week, and it was soooooo hard!! I feel like I lost all upper body strength…but the good news is, its only been a week back in the pool and I already feel better, so I know you will get stronger fast!

Thanks for giving me hope!! I can’t tell if I’m sore from yoga yesterday or I’m already feeling sore from swimming today. HA!
