Hello there Geek Turned Athlete Readers! First, thanks to Nicole for featuring me on her Change the Way You Move series. It definitely feels like the time of year to be trying some new activities.


Well, a little about me. My name is Diana and blather on over at www.dianatries-a-tri.blogspot.com. I started blogging as a way to keep myself accountable on my road to my first triathlon. I’ve now met that goal, run a few other races, and am looking forward to next season already! Just like Nicole though, I wanted to try some new things now that I’m not specifically training for any races for a while.

I’m changing the way I move by taking a new class at my gym called Tacfit. It’s similar to Crossfit which is a little better known. Lots of kettle bells, box jumps, pull ups, squats etc. etc. It’s intense metabolic circuit training for 20 minutes with a 5 minute stretch and 5 minute cool down stretch inspired by yoga movements. The average class is two twenty-something muscular (or as I say, hunky) guys, the trainer, and me. The first time I went, the trainer and my classmates doubted that I could finish, they told me, ‘not to be ashamed’ if I didn’t finish. I of course had to finish after that! Now I’m totally hooked.

I don’t even know if there is such thing as a typical workout. They are different everytime. Some are straight movement for 20 minutes, some have short bursts with rest included. Others, your rest is determined by how fast you complete your workout. Here is an example of one of the workouts…

Tuesday’s workout:

15 Squats
10 Quad Presses – Which is like being on all fours but instead of on your knees it’s your toes, back parallel to the floor, then you drop down, like a weird quad engaged push-up. Tough to explain.
5 Pull-Ups

You get a minute to do this, and you start again every minute, on the minute, for 20 minutes. So twenty circuits of the above workout. As fast as you go determines your rest. If you go over the minute, you finish your set then rest until the next minute is over. I had to skip four sets. Hunky dudes 1 & 2 had to skip one each. My legs were shaking, and my knees kept hyper extending because my legs were so jiggly. Trainer Aaron, Hunky dudes 1 & 2 both told me that I did a good job. I know that doesn’t look hard, but doing it for 20 minutes with almost no rest makes it really really difficult!

    I love this kind of workout! Sonjia my trainer has turned me on to plyo, functional, compound moves w tabada, reps…. etc. This is right up my boat! Thanks for sharing 😉
