Hello Triathlon Season 2012 - Geek Turned Athlete

Hello Triathlon Season 2012

For those of you who get to ride year around, be thankful for that!! For those of you who don’t, I bet you are becoming one with your trainer, aren’t you? Ha!

Well, the trainer and I are definitely becoming one this winter as well.

My tri team has been riding together in the basement of one of the local bike shops here in Spokane, and I finally joined them because they opened it up to Saturdays.

It was 1 hour and 45 minutes of watching a Spinervals video (those videos are NO joke, by the way) and sweating my butt off despite being positioned in front of an open door letting 30 degree air in.

This was after an hour of pretty hardcore swimming.

The last 15 minutes were the worst! I kept thinking to myself, “How am I supposed to run tomorrow?”

Tomorrow came. My legs were stiff. I met with my tri group at 7am on Sunday not sure how my legs were going to do. I’ve been doing most of my long runs on the treadmill instead of outside because of the ice situation.

Side Note: I have 3 pairs of cleats, and I loathe them.

We all headed out on the trail. I kept making excuses why I needed to “take it easy” for the run. I was nervous, and I didn’t know why.

“My knees have been hurting lately.”

“I am tired.”

Blah, blah, blah…

Once I started running though, my legs took over. They felt the ground beneath them pushing off with each step. Quick feet, quick feet. I slowly made my way up near the front of the group. I had the four guys in the front within eyesight. My goal was to keep them within eyesight. That went out the window when they started plugging away in the low 7 min/ miles for their “slow” run.

My new goal? Keep it at a steady pace throughout the run. Don’t blow up. This was supposed to be at my Z1 to Z2 for goodness sake. Although I was by myself, I still got in a fantastic run. It was great to stretch the legs out and run for a prolonged period at a nice pace without the fear of slipping and breaking my leg!  Finishing exhilarated and feeling like I could run 5 more miles at that pace no problem, I headed back to the coffee shop to talk triathlon with my team. 😉

Triathlon Training Season 2012 is here, and I’m welcoming it with open arms! Yippie!

Any good training this weekend??

Man that looks intense, good for you! Pretty sure my legs would stop working long before I was done that intense bike session!

I have a hard training ride tomorrow, about 70 miles with lots of climbing! But I will just be thankful that I am in beautiful Southern California. 😉
